Capacity to Save: Less Pessimistic Household Perceptions in Q1 2026

In the first quarter of 2026, 12.1% of households, compared with 87.8%, expect to save over the next 12 months. The opinion balance related to this indicator remained negative, at minus 75.7 points, compared with minus 78.5 points in the previous quarter and minus 77.7 points in the same quarter of the previous year.

The results of the household economic survey conducted by the High Commission for Planning (HCP) for the first quarter of 2026 reveal that 12.1% of households, compared with 87.8%, expect to be able to save over the next 12 months.

“In the first quarter of 2026, 12.1% of households, compared with 87.8%, expect to save over the next 12 months. The opinion balance related to this indicator remained negative at minus 75.7 points, compared with minus 78.5 points in the previous quarter and minus 77.7 points in the same quarter of the previous year,” the HCP states in an information note.

The same source also reports that in Q1 2026, 93.3% of households declare that food prices have increased over the past 12 months.

As a result, the opinion balance stood at minus 92.7 points, compared with minus 90.9 points in the previous quarter and minus 97.4 points in the same quarter of the previous year.

As for expectations regarding price trends over the next 12 months, food prices are expected to continue rising according to 78.9% of households, compared with only 2.4% who expect prices to decline.

The opinion balance remained negative, standing at minus 76.5 points, compared with minus 73 points in the previous quarter and minus 80 points in the same quarter of the previous year.
