Health: Ibn Sina Hospital, a Reconstruction That Changes Everything…
In the heart of the capital, the iconic Ibn Sina Hospital is undergoing an architectural and healthcare renaissance. With over a thousand beds and modernized technical facilities, the future university hospital promises to transform access to care in the capital and strengthen the national healthcare system.
In Rabat, the public healthcare offering is undergoing a full transformation. The reconstruction of the new Ibn Sina Hospital, whose work is advancing at a steady pace, heralds a reconfiguration of access to care in the capital.
Inaugurated in 1954, the Avicenne University Hospital Center of Rabat has indeed been under reconstruction since May 2022.
This care, research, and medical training site was for decades a pillar of public health whose upgrading is now imperative given the evolution of care needs and the reform of the health system.
The project launched three years ago required an investment of 6 billion dirhams, which will enable the construction of a new hospital adapted to the modern requirements of healthcare.
The establishment will comprise several buildings: a main 33-story inpatient tower, a second 11-story tower that will house specialized units, a medical and technical center, intensive care and resuscitation units, outpatient consultation services, emergency departments, as well as training centers.
The new construction must also integrate modern standards of ecology and comfort, including natural ventilation, green spaces, and modern technical infrastructure. All this with the aim of creating a sustainable, functional, and environmentally friendly hospital.
According to the original schedule announced by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the site is expected to be inaugurated during the first half of 2026 and would provide the capital with an additional bed capacity of 1,044 beds.
That is a 25% increase in regional hospital capacity. This will, according to the Ministry of Health’s strategy, help decongest Rabat.

The new hospital thus represents a major shift towards the modernization and strengthening of healthcare services in both the Kénitra-Rabat-Salé region and at the national level. The Kingdom is investing massively to improve access to care and reduce regional disparities.
Thus, in addition to the Avicenne project, one can also cite the Mohammed V University Hospital in Tangier (797 beds), the Sbata-Ain Chock Proximity University Hospital in Casablanca (100 beds), inaugurated in 2025, the Euromed University Hospital in Fez, a smart hospital with a capacity of 350 beds.
Among these structuring projects, five university hospitals are noteworthy in Agadir, Laâyoune, Errachidia, Guelmim, and Béni-Mellal, as well as proximity and provincial hospitals in the cities of Taroudant, Taliouine, Ouarzazate, Tamansourt in Marrakech, Azilal, Chichaoua.
In rural areas, 950 health centers have been rehabilitated out of a targeted total of 1,400. The hospital rehabilitation will result in 2,056 additional beds by 2028, with 1,729 beds operational by 2025.
