Tires: China Boosts Its Presence in Morocco
Chinese manufacturers are ramping up investments in the country’s tire industry. A promising sector, amid strong growth in automobile production in the Kingdom.
The tire industry is one of the key niches attracting Chinese automotive giants to Morocco.
The first player to pave the way was Qingdao Sentury Tire, which launched its tire production plant (20 hectares) in the Mohammed VI Tangier Tech City in September 2024, with an investment of 100 million dirhams (MDH).
This site has an initial capacity of 6 million tires, which was set to reach 12 million units/year starting in the summer of 2025. Production is primarily intended for the African, European, and American markets.
The icing on the cake: in May 2025, the manufacturer announced the reallocation of the investment planned for its As Pontes plant in Spain to the one in Tangier.
Shandong Daye, specialized in producing steel cord for tires, joined the Tangier ecosystem last April by announcing the establishment of a plant dedicated to producing tire bead wire and steel cables for tires.
With an investment of over 1 billion dirhams (MMDH), this project is driven by its subsidiary Daye Morocco.
Revitalizing the national industry
The industrial unit will be able to produce up to 100,000 tons of steel bead wire for tires and 100,000 tons of steel cables annually. Production will be carried out in two phases: first, a capacity of 40,000 tons for each type of product, followed by an additional 60,000 tons/year.
One month later, its compatriot Shandong Yongsheng Rubber unveiled its project to manufacture semi-steel radial tires in Oujda. The plant, whose construction is set to begin in November 2025, will have an initial production capacity of 6 million tires per year, which is expected to gradually reach 12 million units.
Last but not least, in late August 2025, another Chinese giant, Guizhou Tyre, chose the Kingdom to establish its second overseas production base after the one in Vietnam. In Vietnam, it produces heavy-duty tires (1.2 million units per year) and passenger car radial tires (PCR), with a capacity of 6 million units per year.
These investments, which are expected to continue, will help revitalize the national tire industry. A promising sector in the context of strong growth in automobile production in Morocco.
