Morocco-Spain: Sánchez highlights effectiveness of migration cooperation with the Kingdom
Close cooperation with Rabat has led to a “very significant” reduction in irregular arrivals in Spanish territory, the Spanish leader notably stated.
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, highlighted the exemplary and effective cooperation with the Kingdom in managing migration flows.
In an interview with CNN on the sidelines of his participation in the World Governments Summit in Dubai, the Spanish leader emphasized that the close cooperation with Rabat has led to a “very significant” reduction in irregular arrivals on Spanish territory.
He explained that effectively managing migration flows is the result of joint commitment and close coordination with countries of origin and transit, primarily citing Morocco as a key strategic partner in this regional dynamic.
According to the latest data from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, irregular migrant arrivals to Spain saw a significant 42.6% decrease in 2025, largely due to a sharp decline in arrivals via the Canary Islands route.
The Spanish Prime Minister also noted that migration to Spain is primarily linked to the “strength and resilience of the country’s economy,” adding that 90% of migrants arrive through legal channels.
Mr. Sánchez also stated that while approximately 10% of the Spanish social security system’s revenue comes from migrants, they account for only about 1% of the system’s expenditures.
