Morocco-Egypt: A new era of economic cooperation is taking shape
The two countries have implemented a series of concrete measures to boost bilateral trade, promote economic integration, and deepen the historical ties uniting the two nations, following a visit by Omar Hjira, accompanied by a Moroccan delegation, to Cairo.
As part of strengthening economic and commercial relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Arab Republic of Egypt, a Moroccan delegation led by Omar Hjira, Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry and Trade, responsible for Foreign Trade, made an official visit to Cairo on May 4.
Made up of representatives from the Moroccan Exporters Confederation, the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), the Federation of Moroccan Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Services, as well as economic operators from sectors such as agriculture, agri-food, automotive, electronics, pharmaceuticals, engineering, textiles, etc., the Moroccan delegation was received in a spirit of partnership and cooperation.
This visit is part of ongoing efforts by the governments of both countries, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, to consolidate trade, promote economic integration, and deepen the historical ties between the two nations.
The discussions highlighted the importance of diversifying exchanges between the two economies, whose potential remains underexploited despite the existence of numerous preferential agreements, such as the Agadir Agreement, the Arab Free Trade Area, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
New initiatives to accelerate economic integration
Both parties agreed on a set of concrete measures to stimulate bilateral trade, including the creation of a joint cooperation platform bringing together the public and private sectors to remove obstacles to trade; coordination of positions in African and international forums to amplify regional integration; holding, in the last quarter of 2025, a meeting of the joint trade committee, as well as the periodic organization of business forums between Moroccan and Egyptian operators, alternating between the two countries. They also agreed to establish cross-economic weeks-one Moroccan economic week in Egypt and another Egyptian week in Morocco; to conclude a memorandum of understanding to facilitate trade; to set up strategic coordination in African markets, leveraging complementary geographic positions: Egypt in East Africa and Morocco in West Africa, and to strengthen access for national brands to each other’s markets.
On the sidelines of the visit, a bilateral B2B Economic Forum was organized under the aegis of the Egyptian Minister of Investment, Hassan El-Khatib, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Omar Hjira. This forum allowed companies from both countries to explore partnership opportunities in high-potential sectors: seafood, automotive components, medical devices, cosmetics, chemicals, engineering, etc.
Both delegations welcomed the progress made since the ministerial visit of February 27 in Rabat, highlighting a positive dynamic marked by intensified exchanges and a shared desire to move to an operational phase.
This visit marks a decisive step towards a more ambitious and balanced economic partnership between Morocco and Egypt, serving shared development and South-South cooperation.
