Eid al-Adha: Prices Will Be Very Affordable
The situation in the livestock sector has improved markedly, with an abundant supply of sheep and prices expected to be affordable by the time of Eid al-Adha. However, speculative practices have been reported.
The livestock restocking program has produced positive results. Breeders interviewed at SIAM 2026 reported an abundant supply on the market, thanks to this scheme, which enabled the preservation of breeding females—thus encouraging reproduction—and provided financial assistance for the purchase of animal feed. “Since 2018, we have suffered greatly from successive years of drought. But thanks to this program, we are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel,” says Abidi M’barek, a sheep breeder.
However, the main constraint that remains is the high cost of animal feed. Prices are once again rising due to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. That said, “grazing areas are currently so well supplied that we rely less on feed from international markets.” For Eid al-Adha, this breeder estimates selling prices starting at 4,000 dirhams per head. He nevertheless criticized the behavior of certain opportunistic breeders and intermediaries who are keeping their livestock out of the commercial market in order to benefit from rising prices.
In fact, Aziz Akhannouch directly addressed breeders during a plenary session at the House of Councillors, urging them to release their sheep onto the market to help bring down meat prices. For the Head of Government, it is unacceptable that meat prices remain high despite the recovery in supply following the livestock restocking program.
