Education Reform: Akhannouch Chairs a Meeting to Monitor Implementation

The Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, chaired on Wednesday, February 25 in Rabat a meeting to follow up on the implementation of the reform of the national education and preschool system, devoted to assessing the progress of the priority projects launched in this sector, which has been placed at the top of the government’s concerns, in accordance with the High Directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

At the beginning of this meeting, Akhannouch stated that reforming the education system is at the heart of the government’s priorities, as a mechanism for developing human capital and a lever for consolidating the foundations of the social state, as desired by His Majesty the King.

He stressed that the government has put in place the financial allocations and the necessary investments to improve the quality of public schooling and make it a factor contributing to the entrenchment of social equity and equal opportunities.

Speeding up the pace of implementation of the projects

The Head of Government also called for continuing efforts aimed at accelerating the pace of implementation of the projects and consolidating a governance approach based on results, while initiating reflection on a national post-2026 education strategy, with a view to building a quality public school system that guarantees equity and inclusion.

This meeting made it possible to review the progress status of the various priority projects, notably the project to generalize preschool education, now 80% completed and having benefited more than 985,000 children.

The meeting also addressed the ongoing expansion of the “Pioneer Schools” program, which is expected to cover 80% of primary schools starting in the 2026–2027 school year, after evaluations confirmed a notable improvement in students’ mastery of basic learning skills. This development is consistent with the first strategic objective of the 2022–2026 roadmap, which aims to raise the mastery rate of fundamental learning to 70%.

Reducing school dropout

Regarding the “Pioneer Middle Schools” program, positive results have been achieved in reducing school dropout, with the rate falling from 8.4% to 4.45% in the institutions concerned, alongside strengthened mechanisms for support and individualized follow-up.

Significant progress has also been recorded in reducing the rate of classroom overcrowding, and in strengthening school support services in terms of school transport and boarding facilities, particularly in rural areas, in line with the principle of equal opportunities.

The meeting also noted the expansion of Amazigh-language teaching in primary school, as well as the teaching of English at the secondary level.
