Morocco continues to rise as a major player in the international blueberry market. Previously ranked seventh, the Kingdom has now become the world’s fourth-largest exporter of these small red berries in 2024, tied with Spain and Chile, according to data published by the Peruvian agricultural news platform Agraria.pe.

The country’s entry into the global Top 5 is attributed to a dramatic surge in exports, which skyrocketed from 636 tons in 2009 to 83,000 tons last year—equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 43% over 15 years. Favorable agricultural and climatic conditions, high yields, and the use of advanced technologies are cited as the key drivers behind this success.

Towards Increased Moroccan Exports

Peru dominates the rankings with a 31% market share, followed by Chile, Spain, and Morocco (8% each), and the United States with 7%. Globally, blueberry exports reached a volume of 1 million tons last year, generating $6.73 billion in revenue.

According to the same source, Morocco’s integration of new production zones—such as Dakhla and the Atlas regions—will enable the country to extend its harvest season and meet the demands of diverse international markets.

“This territorial expansion, combined with the ongoing evolution of agricultural practices, will help strengthen the stability of Morocco’s supply and enhance its ability to compete with key global rivals, such as Spain, Chile, and Peru,” the report adds.
