A report from SemiAnalysis suggests that while data center growth plays a role in rising energy prices, market design and policy decisions are more significant factors. Since 2020, residential electricity prices in the U.S. have surged significantly and are projected to continue rising, partly due to a pricing mechanism within the PJM Interconnection, which tends to overestimate future electricity demand. In contrast, other markets, like Texas, have maintained stable prices despite similar data center developments. As concerns mount, hyperscalers have made commitments to cover additional electricity costs and invest in local communities, while also pursuing renewable energy sources. However, skepticism remains regarding the financial viability of these pledges, especially given the industry’s struggles to achieve profitability.
