Airports 2030: ONDA Launches the Fast Baggage Center
ONDA Inaugurates New Automated Transfer Baggage Sorting Center. The Office accelerates modernization of Mohammed V Airport, supports Royal Air Maroc’s development, and positions Casablanca as a global transit hub by 2030.
As part of its Airports 2030 strategy, Morocco’s National Airports Office (ONDA) has reached a new milestone with the launch of the “Fast Baggage Center by ONDA”—an automated transit baggage handling facility housed in a fully redesigned logistics hangar to accommodate growing transit flows.
According to ONDA’s statement, this 15,200 m² facility features cutting-edge technological infrastructure designed to double sorting capacity, streamline connecting flights, and reduce baggage delivery times.
“The new system now processes 6,000 bags per hour, with an average handling time reduced to 5 minutes. This marks a major qualitative leap in operational efficiency,” the statement notes.
At the core of the system, two interconnected automated sorters separately manage short and long connecting baggage. These are supported by security lines equipped with next-generation scanners and explosive detection devices compliant with international standards.
Through centralized sorting, smart indexing stations, oversized baggage control, and an integrated monitoring system, the center ensures seamless transit operations with heightened security and a 15% reduction in energy consumption.
“This technological advancement will directly strengthen Royal Air Maroc’s scaling efforts by facilitating large-scale transit operations, particularly to Africa. It aligns with a broader transformation strategy to position Casablanca as a global transit hub capable of handling growing traffic with precision, efficiency, and reliability,” the statement adds.
At the same time, thanks to a centralized setup, this new center will alleviate congestion in the traditional sorting process, significantly improving baggage wait times upon arrival for all passengers.
It is important to note that the Fast Baggage Center is now fully operational. Located at the core of the logistics infrastructure, the system will ultimately ensure a marked improvement in baggage delivery times upon arrival.
However, a few weeks of adjustments will be required to optimize operations and fully evaluate the effects on passengers.
