Agadir: SMIT Puts 10 Billion Dirhams on a Mega-Tourism Resort
The future integrated seaside resort will have a minimum capacity of 12,000 beds, mainly in the mid-range category, including a mega resort/club hotel developed over 70 hectares of beachfront land. Details.
A new mega tourism project is being developed north of Agadir. It is a resort to be built in Aghroud, 30 km from the city, according to official documents we consulted.
Led by the Moroccan Society for Tourism Engineering (SMIT), the project aims to reposition Agadir as the tourism engine of the Souss-Massa region and to strengthen its appeal among major international seaside destinations.
With an estimated budget of 1 billion dirhams (MAD 1bn) excluding taxes, the development will be built on a 594-hectare site owned by SMIT. Served by National Road RN1 linking Agadir to Essaouira, the site will undergo a major infrastructure overhaul, including a planned rerouting of the national road outside the project’s land area to ensure urban planning coherence and high-quality development.
Hotel capacity of 12,000 beds
The future resort will offer at least 12,000 beds, mainly in the mid-range segment, including a 2,000-bed mega resort/club hotel developed over 70 hectares of beachfront land, combining accommodation, water-based leisure facilities, cultural entertainment, and themed dining. Around 5,000 beds will be spread along the shoreline, while the upper part of the site will host unusual and atypical tourist accommodations.
Beyond lodging, the project will include a central “village hub” bringing together retail, dining, cultural spaces, and local-terroir products, as well as theme parks and an introductory golf course. A marina/watersports base, an equestrian center, and wellness facilities are also planned to diversify the visitor experience.
An eco-responsible seaside resort
In parallel, SMIT plans to develop most of the coastline into a lively seafront promenade at least 10 meters wide, with green spaces, playgrounds, sanitary facilities, and public access to the beach. Pedestrian walkways, bike lanes, panoramic paths, circulation via electric carts, and landscaped parking areas will round out the infrastructure.
The resort will adopt a sustainable approach, including preserving flora and fauna, optimizing water management and reusing wastewater, factoring in local seismic risk, and ensuring environmentally sound waste management.
To ensure optimal delivery of the project, SMIT has just launched an architectural competition to recruit a service provider responsible for urban development and subdivision planning studies, as well as works supervision. The winner’s name will be announced on April 7.
