2026 Legislative Elections: Campaign Spending Cap Raised to 600,000 Dirhams

The Government Council adopted on Thursday two draft decrees relating to the election of members of the House of Representatives, presented by the Minister of the Interior.

The first is draft decree No. 2.26.279, which amends and supplements decree No. 2.16.668 (August 10, 2016), setting the ceiling for candidates’ electoral expenses during campaign periods for general and by-elections of members of the House of Representatives, as specified by the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament and government spokesperson, Mustapha Baitas, during a press briefing following the Council meeting.

This text amends and supplements the aforementioned decree that sets the ceiling for candidates’ electoral expenses within the framework of campaigns related to general and by-elections of members of the lower house, he added.

In this context, and in order to keep pace with the evolution of candidates’ campaign spending levels during these campaigns, the ceiling on electoral expenses has been increased from 500,000 to 600,000 dirhams per candidate, the minister delegate indicated.

The second draft decree, No. 2.26.278, amends decree No. 2.11.605 of October 19, 2011, which sets the form and content of the single ballot paper for the election of members of the House of Representatives, Mr. Baitas said.

This decree, he explained, aims to amend the aforementioned decree, as well as to specify provisions relating to the arrangements for ordering candidate lists on the single ballot paper, on the occasion of general and by-elections of members of the House of Representatives.
