Pope Leo’s Call for AI Ethics and Peace

Pope Leo, in his inaugural encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas,” expresses urgent concerns regarding the rapid development and potential consequences of artificial intelligence (AI). He warns that AI may propagate misinformation and prioritize conflict, leading to a state of unending war. The pope calls for stringent government regulation and oversight of AI systems, emphasizing that ownership of AI data should not rest solely with private entities and advocating for the protection of workers’ rights and children’s safety. He highlights the alarming advancements in autonomous weapons, which have outpaced regulatory frameworks.

In a notable shift, Pope Leo repudiates the long-standing Church doctrine of just war, arguing that it has been misused to justify various conflicts. He characterizes the current global culture as one where peace is a fleeting moment between wars, and he cautions that some leaders may initiate armed conflicts to distract from domestic issues. Additionally, the pope reflects on the Church’s historical role in slavery, apologizing for its delayed condemnation of transatlantic slavery and recognizing the ongoing exploitation in modern contexts, particularly regarding labor conditions tied to technology and AI.
