Jean Bennett, a molecular biologist, and her husband, ophthalmologist Albert Maguire, have been awarded the prestigious Breakthrough Prize for life sciences, sharing the $3 million prize with physician Katherine High for their pioneering work on Luxturna, the first approved gene therapy for blindness. This groundbreaking therapy addresses Leber congenital amaurosis, a genetic disorder that can lead to total blindness, and has significantly enhanced the vision of patients, with one describing the joy of seeing their child’s face for the first time. The couple began their collaboration at Harvard Medical School while dissecting a brain, and over 25 years at the University of Pennsylvania, they developed a gene therapy that successfully transported a functional gene into retinal cells.

The recognition of their contributions is set against a backdrop of concern about the politicization of science, as both Bennett and Maguire expressed fears about the detrimental impacts of such actions on future research and innovation. Additional accolades at the Breakthrough ceremony included awards for advancements in gene therapy for sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia, highlighting ongoing efforts to correct genetic disorders through innovative treatments. The evening also featured reflections from scientists about the current challenges facing scientific research in the United States, emphasizing a shift from a previously thriving biomedical research environment to one experiencing significant turmoil due to various governmental actions.
