MV Hondius Passengers Enter Precautionary Isolation in the UK

Passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship have been transferred to a dedicated isolation facility on the Wirral after returning to the UK amid concerns over hantavirus exposure. Around 20 British nationals, along with one German resident of the UK and one Japanese passenger, were flown from Tenerife to Manchester Airport on a chartered flight and taken directly to Arrowe Park Hospital, a site previously used for quarantine during the early stages of the Covid‑19 pandemic. All passengers tested negative before travel and none were showing symptoms on arrival, with health authorities stressing that the risk to the general public remains very low.

The isolation measures are precautionary and form part of a controlled public health response. Strict infection‑control protocols were followed throughout the journey, including the use of personal protective equipment by all staff involved. During an initial monitoring period of up to 72 hours, passengers are undergoing clinical assessments and further testing in self‑contained accommodation within the Arrowe Park site. Hospital leaders have emphasised that routine NHS services are unaffected and that any passenger who develops symptoms would be transferred to a specialist infectious diseases unit.

Public health officials have underlined that hantavirus differs significantly from Covid‑19 and requires very close contact for transmission. Following the hospital observation period, specialists will determine whether individuals can complete the remainder of their isolation at home or another suitable location, with ongoing monitoring by UK health protection teams to ensure safety and compliance with guidance.
