Kimmel Returns to ABC After Suspension

Jimmy Kimmel will return to late-night television on Tuesday night after Disney and ABC decided to reinstate his show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” following an indefinite suspension. The initial decision to suspend production was made in response to Kimmel’s comments regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which were deemed ill-timed and insensitive. This suspension led to significant backlash from the creative community, with around 400 celebrities, including notable figures like Martin Short and Tom Hanks, signing an ACLU letter promoting free speech. 

Disney executives, including CEO Bob Iger and co-chair of Disney Entertainment Dana Walden, approved Kimmel’s return based on what they believed was best for the company rather than external pressures. It remains uncertain whether all ABC affiliates will air the show, and it is unknown if Kimmel will issue an apology for his earlier remarks. 

The late-night television landscape has been shifting, with audiences increasingly opting for social media clips over full episodes. While Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” has remained the most watched late-night program, Paramount’s decision to cancel it in May due to advertising downturns suggests a broader trend away from politically-driven content. Kimmel’s current contract with ABC runs until 2026, but he has been contemplating stepping down from his hosting duties in the near future.
