BMW Recalls 180,000 Vehicles in China Over Fire Risk
BMW is recalling nearly 180,000 vehicles in China due to a potential fire risk stemming from a defect in the air conditioning system’s electrical harness. The recall affects both locally produced Series 5 vehicles and various imported models, with free inspections and repairs being offered to affected owners.
BMW has initiated a recall of nearly 180,000 vehicles in China due to a potential defect that could pose a fire risk in extreme cases, according to the Chinese market regulator. This development follows a significant 12.5% decline in the company’s sales in the Chinese market over the past year. The recall, which takes effect immediately, involves 133,849 locally produced Series 5 vehicles and 45,678 imported cars of various models. The defect is related to the improper positioning of the electrical harness for the air conditioning system in the front compartment, which can deteriorate during air filter replacement, potentially leading to a short circuit and fire risk. BMW’s entities in China will conduct free inspections, reposition the electrical harness, and replace it if damaged. The affected Series 5 vehicles were manufactured between December 2023 and April 2025, while the imported models include 8,978 Series 5, 36,527 Series 7, and 173 M5 units produced between 2022 and 2025.
