Berlinale 76 Unveils Star-Studded, Politically Charged Competition Lineup

The 76th edition of the Berlin Film Festival has announced an impressive competition lineup featuring notable films and filmmakers. Highlights include Karim Aïnouz’s “Rosebush Pruning,” which stars Riley Keough, Callum Turner, and Elle Fanning, as well as Channing Tatum’s psychological thriller “Josephine,” which explores a family’s quest for justice after their daughter witnesses a crime. Under the artistic direction of Tricia Tuttle, this year’s lineup emphasizes a blend of prestigious international directors, politically charged narratives, and intricate character studies alongside prominent Hollywood talent.

The festival features returning filmmakers such as İlker Çatak and Alain Gomis, whose films examine themes of state oppression and family heritage. Other anticipated entries in the competition include “At the Sea,” starring Amy Adams as a former dancer confronting her past, and “Queen at Sea,” featuring Juliette Binoche in a poignant exploration of dementia and familial devotion.

Several films present compelling narratives that traverse various cultural contexts, such as “Moscas,” which delves into the intricacies of human connection amid illness, and “Soumsoum, la nuit des astres,” a coming-of-age tale from Chad. Animation is also represented with Yoshitoshi Shinomiya’s debut feature “A New Dawn,” blending Japanese and French sensibilities.

The festival will open with Shahrbanoo Sadat’s romantic comedy “No Good Men,” set in Kabul during a pivotal moment in the city’s history. Tuttle aims to further align the Berlinale with the Cannes Film Festival in terms of artistic excellence and global significance. The festival is set to run from February 12 to 22.
