Precious metals: After gold’s surge, silver crosses 75 dollars an ounce for the first time
Silver reached a peak of 75.1515 dollars an ounce (31.1 g). Gold also set a new record, topping out at 4,531.04 dollars an ounce.
The price of silver exceeded the historic threshold of 75 dollars an ounce this Friday, in a context of a strong generalized rise in precious and industrial metals, fueled by economic and geopolitical uncertainties at the end of the year.
Since the beginning of the year, the yellow metal has shown an increase close to 70%, while silver has surged by more than 150%, unprecedented annual performances since 1979.
These metals are benefiting from renewed interest as safe-haven assets, while the dollar and U.S. government bonds, traditionally perceived as safe investments, have seen their attractiveness erode over the course of the year.
The rise in silver is also supported by strong industrial demand, particularly in the electronics sector and technologies linked to the energy transition.
