Health: Morocco bets on AI to strengthen early diagnosis
An AI-assisted ultrasound program has been launched to support midwives in rural areas, with a pilot project deployed in the health centers of Aghbala in the Béni Mellal province, and Moulay Bouazza in the Khénifra province.
The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tehraoui, announced Monday in Rabat that his department is integrating artificial intelligence to improve early diagnosis in the Kingdom’s health facilities.
In response to an oral question in the House of Representatives, the minister presented several ongoing initiatives. An AI-assisted ultrasound program has been launched to support midwives in rural areas, with a pilot project deployed in the health centers of Aghbala in the Béni Mellal province, and Moulay Bouazza in the Khénifra province. The objective is to improve the quality of diagnosis and better detect high-risk pregnancies.
Furthermore, the National Oncology Institute of the Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat has launched an AI-based early screening solution for breast cancer, aiming to accelerate and refine diagnoses to optimize the chances of rapid care.
On the broader digital transformation front, the ministry is working on the gradual unification of health IT systems, with notable progress in several regions. The establishment of a unified medical record, allowing tracking of the patient’s journey across different levels of care, is also underway, as is the development of telemedicine to compensate for shortages of specialists in certain regions.
