Marriages of minors: From 26,298 cases in 2017 to 8,955 in 2024
The decrease is attributed to growing awareness, although the phenomenon remains marked by strong disparities between rural and urban areas.
The Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, stated on Monday at the House of Representatives that marriages of minors have seen a clear decline, dropping from 26,298 cases in 2017 to only 8,955 in 2024.
In response to an oral question on “the issue of the marriage of minors,” Ouahbi stressed that the number of requests for the marriage of minors has fallen by around 20,000 requests, noting that these figures “reflect increased awareness of the seriousness of this phenomenon.”
The minister recalled that in 2020, some 11,830 requests were recorded in rural areas, compared to 4,527 in urban areas.
This downward trend, he pointed out, continued in 2023, with a total of 9,021 requests, of which only 2,880 were in urban areas.
Ouahbi observed that the marriage of minors is a “matter of culture and awareness,” calling for better sensitization regarding the role of girls within society and the need to offer them all opportunities for fulfillment.
