Lions of the Atlas: Mohamed Ouahbi Officially the New Coach
Mohamed Ouahbi has been appointed the new head coach of the Morocco national football team, succeeding Walid Regragui, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaâ, announced on Thursday evening.
During a press conference held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmoura (a suburb of Salé), the President of the FRMF, Fouzi Lekjaâ, wished Ouahbi every success in his new role. He also highlighted the success of the national strategy launched in 2008, which has produced quality players and Moroccan coaches of whom the country is proud, such as Ammouta, Skitioui, Sellami, as well as Ouahbi.
João Sacramento, former assistant to Mourinho, has been appointed first assistant to the new coach. Ouahbi said: “I thank His Majesty King Mohammed VI for all the efforts made for football, as well as Fouzi Lekjaa for the trust he has placed in me. I intend to work with great determination and patriotism to develop the Moroccan national team.” The other members of the staff will be announced soon.
World champion with the Atlas Cubs (U20) in Chile, Ouahbi takes charge of the senior national team just a few months before the 2026 World Cup.
Also a finalist of the Africa Cup of Nations (U20) in Egypt, the Moroccan coach will begin on Morocco’s bench during the two friendly matches that the Atlas Lions will play against Ecuador in Spain (March 27) and Paraguay in France (March 31).
At the 2026 World Cup, Morocco has been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti.
