Diplomacy: The Kingdom of Morocco elected rapporteur of the UN Committee Against Torture
The election of Abderrazak Rouwane as rapporteur of the Committee Against Torture reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to preventing ill-treatment and protecting persons deprived of liberty, while reinforcing its credibility on the international stage.
The Kingdom of Morocco was elected on Monday as rapporteur of the United Nations Committee Against Torture, represented by Abderrazak Rouwane, a prominent expert in the field of human rights. This took place at the opening of the Committee’s 84th session, being held in Geneva until May 1.
This election confirms the relevance of the Kingdom’s efforts in combating torture, which have resulted in the establishment of a legal and institutional framework, the implementation of a range of reforms to strengthen the prevention of ill-treatment and the protection of persons deprived of liberty, as well as the creation of a National Preventive Mechanism against Torture (NPM).
The Moroccan expert had been re-elected by an overwhelming majority last October in Geneva to the Committee Against Torture for the 2026–2029 term, during the 20th meeting of the States Parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, with the participation of 166 States.
Moreover, the opening session of this 84th session was marked by the election of new members, including Moulaye Abdallah Moulaye Abdallah, representing Mauritania.
Composed of ten experts, the Committee Against Torture is the body responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Convention against Torture, in particular by issuing recommendations to States Parties.
