Cannes 2026: “La Más Dulce” by Laïla Marrakchi in competition in the “Un Certain Regard” section

The film “La Más Dulce” by Moroccan director Laïla Marrakchi will compete in the “Un Certain Regard” section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 12 to 23, the festival’s management announced when it unveiled the official selection on Thursday in Paris.

“She came a few years ago to Un Certain Regard. She lives between Morocco and France. But this time, it’s a film made between Morocco and Spain. And the film is called La Más Dulce,” revealed the festival’s general delegate Thierry Frémaux, while listing the fifteen films selected in this category, which has been “refocused on emerging cinema” as part of the official selection, whose main section features 21 films competing this year for the highly coveted Palme d’Or.

The film, which tells the story of two young women who leave for a season to pick fruit in southern Spain, was awarded last year at the 8th edition of the Atlas Workshops, organized as part of the 22nd Marrakech International Film Festival, where it won the Atlas Award for post-production.

Laïla Marrakchi was born and raised in Casablanca before moving to Paris at the age of 18 to pursue her studies.

After her first feature film, Marock (2005), presented in the “Un Certain Regard” section of the Cannes Film Festival, she directed “Rock the Casbah” (2013), a fiction film featuring a prestigious cast including Hiam Abbass, Nadine Labaki, Lubna Azabal, Morjana Alaoui, and Omar Sharif.

Marrakchi has also directed two episodes of “The Eddy,” Damien Chazelle’s series produced for Netflix, and has collaborated on several French productions.
