Water management: A new dam worth 428 million MAD planned in Figuig

With a capacity of 25 million m³ and requiring an investment of 428 million dirhams, this project aims to strengthen drinking water supply, protect the region against flooding, and support agricultural irrigation in the Oriental region.

The Directorate of Hydraulic Infrastructure at the Ministry of Equipment and Water has launched an international tender for the construction of the Falit dam in the province of Figuig, as part of the national policy to mobilise water resources.

With a capacity of 25 million cubic metres, the structure will be built on the Mouloudah wadi, north of Bouarfa. It will be a roller-compacted concrete gravity dam, 59 metres high, equipped with a spillway and a bottom outlet, allowing discharge of up to 28 m³ per second and the complete emptying of the reservoir in around fifteen days.

The project pursues three main objectives: ensuring the supply of drinking water to local populations, protecting vulnerable areas from flooding, and strengthening agricultural irrigation in this arid region of the Oriental. Hydrological studies of the wadi indicate a maximum annual inflow of 40.8 million m³, reflecting the episodic and sometimes intense nature of water flows in the area.

Representing an investment of 428 million dirhams, the project is expected to take three years to complete, with commissioning planned between 2029 and 2030.

This project forms part of a broader hydraulic programme in the region, which includes the Kheng Grou mega-dam—already 71% complete with a future capacity of 1.07 billion m³—as well as the future Jbel Lakhal dam, whose construction is scheduled for 2028.
