The United States Reaffirms Its Recognition of Morocco’s Sovereignty Over The Sahara
Reaffirming the position communicated by President Donald Trump to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the United States has reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

In the course of a meeting this Tuesday between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, the latter “reiterated that the United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.”
During the December 2020 phone call between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the President of the United States of America, President Donald Trump had informed the Sovereign of the issuance of a presidential decree—carrying undeniable legal and political force with immediate effect—formalizing the decision of the United States of America to recognize the full sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over the entire region of the Moroccan Sahara.
Furthermore, the head of American diplomacy reaffirmed that the United States “supports the serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the sole basis for a just and lasting resolution to this dispute,” stated State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
Marco Rubio reiterated that the United States “continues to believe that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution.”
In this context, he affirmed that “the American President urges the parties to engage in discussions without delay, based on the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the sole framework for negotiating a mutually acceptable solution.”
The Secretary of State “noted that the United States would facilitate progress toward this goal,” concluded the spokesperson.
