A resolution has just been introduced in the American Congress in tribute to the historical friendship and strategic partnership binding Morocco and the United States, as the anniversary of the commemoration of 250 years of the peace and friendship treaty approaches, under which Morocco was the first country in the world to recognize the United States of America.

Titled: «Recognizing the long-standing friendship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America»,the resolution was introduced to the House Foreign Affairs Committee by Republican Congressman Joe Wilson and Democratic Congressman Bradley Schneider.

The text affirms bipartisan commitment in Washington to strengthen the «historic and strategic» alliance between the two countries, as well as recognizing Morocco’s role, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in promoting peace and regional stability.

«Considering that December 1, 2027, will mark the 250th anniversary of the recognition of the United States of America by the Kingdom of Morocco, the first country to do so, marking an important milestone in one of the oldest diplomatic relations in U.S. history»,reads the preamble of the resolution, which recalls that on July 18, 1787, the United States ratified the Treaty of Peace and Friendship establishing official diplomatic and commercial relations between the United States and Morocco.

The resolution further recalls that this Treaty «remains the longest uninterrupted diplomatic relationship in U.S. history»,that Morocco has «historically fostered religious coexistence, particularly by protecting Jewish communities, and has engaged in interfaith dialogue», and that Moroccan-American communities contribute to America’s cultural diversity.

While emphasizing that both allies have built a «multifaceted partnership based on common strategic, economic, and cultural interests»,the resolution submitted to Congress notes that Morocco «remains the only African country to have concluded a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States and that since its enactment in 2006, bilateral agricultural trade has developed».

The authors of the resolution also highlight «close»bilateral cooperation in regional security, counter-terrorism efforts, military coordination, as well as in nuclear non-proliferation, combating illicit arms trafficking, and enhancing regional security initiatives.

Highlighting Morocco’s role in promoting regional stability, particularly within the framework of the Abraham Accords, as well as the density of Moroccan-American relations in cultural, educational, and humanitarian fields, the resolution asserts the importance of these relations for promoting mutual economic and security interests and «applauds Morocco’s commitment to regional diplomacy, particularly its participation in the Abraham Accords ».

The resolution submitted to Congress encourages continued cooperation between the United States and Morocco in trade, security, digital transformation, and humanitarian action, recognizing shared opportunities and challenges within their partnership while supporting efforts aimed at commemorating this significant milestone by 2027, reflecting its historical and strategic importance to both countries.
