Caftan Week 2025: The Moroccan Sahara in the Spotlight
An exhibition dedicated to Sahrawi artisanal crafts and creations inspired by the heritage of southern Morocco marked the opening on Thursday in Marrakech of the 25th edition of «Caftan Week », celebrated this year under the theme «Sahara, Heritage in Couture ».

Organized by the magazine «Femmes du Maroc », this emblematic event, running until May 11, celebrates a quarter-century of highlighting the Moroccan caftan in all its richness, diversity, and deep cultural roots.
This anniversary edition particularly honors the Moroccan Sahara, offering the public a poetic immersion into the world of dunes, oases, and ancestral know-how, notably through an exhibition dedicated to fashion crafts and traditional jewelry.
On this occasion, Moha Er-rich, director of heritage preservation and innovation at the Secretariat of State for Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, emphasized that this edition aims to showcase a precious heritage.
«It is a traditional garment that has evolved throughout history. Artisans from the southern provinces came to exhibit Sahrawi craftsmanship and their clothing, as part of ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance national intangible heritage », he stated.
He added that an official label related to the Moroccan caftan was recently registered as part of the Secretariat’s strengthened commitments to safeguarding artisanal know-how.
For her part, Ichrak Moubsit, director of «Femmes du Maroc », praised the richness and diversity of this year’s program, highlighting Moroccan creativity in all its forms, and recalling that this anniversary edition offers a true immersion into the world of fashion crafts and ornamental traditions of southern Morocco.
«We wanted to organize an exhibition dedicated to the know-how of the Moroccan Sahara, especially crafts related to jewelry and traditional clothing, to reveal to the public often unknown artisanal treasures », she said, adding that this approach aims to preserve and transmit a rare and precious heritage passionately carried by Moroccan artisans.
A key event on the national cultural calendar, Caftan Week 2025 also offers masterclasses, caftan collection exhibitions, meetings between creators, and a grand final fashion show bringing together renowned Moroccan designers, all committed to promoting the caftan on the international stage.
Through this eclectic program, the event is an ode to transmission, creativity, and Morocco’s plural identity, where tradition and modernity intertwine to tell the story of a garment symbolizing timeless elegance.
From May 9 to 12, Marrakech will transform into the fashion capital, offering guests a sensory journey into the heart of the Moroccan desert. Golden dunes, secret oases, and starry skies will inspire designers who blend tradition and modernity through unique creations, celebrating the Moroccan caftan.
In addition to fashion shows, Caftan Week will feature masterclasses, exhibitions, and meetings, allowing new talents to share their skills. The highlight will be the Caftan 2025 runway show, where the most beautiful pieces will showcase the timeless elegance of the caftan.
After a remarkable 2024 edition, Caftan Week continues to confirm its place as an unmissable event for fashion enthusiasts, balancing heritage, creativity, and refinement.
Zineb Timouri, a member of the Caftan Week organizing committee, states: «This 25th edition is a true celebration of our heritage and current creativity. The Sahara theme offers us the opportunity to pay tribute to this enchanting land that has inspired many creators and artisans. We are delighted to offer this year a unique journey into the desert, where tradition and modernity meet to magnify the caftan in all its beauty ».
Caftan Week 2025 aims to create more than just a visual spectacle-it seeks to spark a dialogue between the past and future of Moroccan fashion. By centering the theme on the Sahara, designers face the delicate challenge of modernizing ancient traditions without compromising their authenticity. With their remarkable vision and creativity, these artists are expected to rise to the occasion, offering a perfect blend of heritage and reinvention.
This edition also arrives at a pivotal moment for Moroccan artisanship, as the nation’s fashion scene experiences a dynamic resurgence. The caftan, Morocco’s iconic garment, has evolved into a powerful symbol of prestige, embodying the rich diversity of the country’s regions and traditions. Caftan Week serves as a critical platform for promoting this evolving craft, positioning Moroccan fashion as both rooted in history and forward-looking.
With a packed agenda and high expectations, Caftan Week 2025 promises to be unforgettable-a celebration of memory and artistry inspired by the mystique of the Sahara.
