Akhannouch: Implementation of Alternative Sentences from August

During the Government Council meeting on May 22, the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, presented the draft decree relating to alternative sentences. This initiative aims to modernize Moroccan criminal policy, promote social reintegration, and reduce prison overcrowding.

At the opening of the Government Council meeting, Aziz Akhannouch delivered a speech marked by commitment to the reform of the judicial system, with a particular emphasis on the adoption of the draft decree concerning the modalities for the application of alternative sentences.

This text, which continues the recently adopted law No. 43-22, will come into effect as of next August and constitutes a major step in the modernization of Moroccan criminal policy.

The Head of Government emphasized that this initiative is part of the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who pays special attention to the overhaul of the judicial system. In his multiple speeches and directives, the Sovereign has called for the adoption of a new criminal policy focused on the revision and adaptation of the legal and procedural criminal framework to societal changes. This approach aims to reconcile punishment with objectives of rehabilitation and social reintegration, while addressing the challenge of prison overcrowding.

Mobilization

The Head of Government reaffirmed the Executive’s commitment to mobilize all necessary resources to ensure the success of this project. He called on the members of government and their respective departments to redouble their efforts and to be fully involved in the implementation of this decree. This collective mobilization is essential to ensure the effectiveness of alternative sentences and their harmonious integration into the Moroccan judicial system.

This draft decree marks a significant advance in building a more humane justice system adapted to contemporary challenges. By placing rehabilitation and reintegration at the heart of criminal policy, Morocco is embarking on the path of a modern judicial system, in line with the aspirations of a constantly evolving society.
