OpenAI’s Ghibli-Style Image Generator Sparks Debate on AI and Creativity

OpenAI has recently launched its most advanced image generation technology integrated into GPT-4o, which excels in producing precise and photorealistic outputs, particularly in the style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli, a renowned Japanese animation studio famous for films like “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro.” This new tool has led to a surge of social media posts showcasing Ghibli-style transformations of user images. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has humorously engaged with this trend, commenting on his unexpected popularity in this context. Conversely, Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has expressed vehement opposition to AI-generated animation, previously stating his disgust and viewing such technology as an insult to life. Additionally, over 400 professionals from the creative industries have raised concerns about AI companies like OpenAI and Google potentially undermining copyright protections as they seek to leverage artistic works for AI training, signaling ongoing tension between technology and the creative sector.
