French President Emmanuel Macron announced a commitment of 109 billion euros (approximately $112.6 billion) for private AI investment in France, intended to enhance the country’s AI sector and described as comparable to the U.S.’s $500 billion AI project, Stargate. Funding will derive from various sources, including the UAE’s plan to invest 30-50 billion euros in an AI data center in France, commitments from French telecommunications firms like Iliad (3 billion euros) and investments from U.S. and Canadian funds. Ahead of the AI Action Summit in Paris, which features prominent attendees like U.S. Vice President JD Vance, EU President Ursula von der Leyen, and CEOs from Google and OpenAI, industry leaders express that while the investment is positive for Europe’s AI ecosystem, more substantial efforts are needed to compete with tech giants like the U.S. and China. The summit will also address the emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese firm with a new AI model that raises questions about development costs, amid concerns of potential bubbles in the AI sector due to massive investments. Additionally, the event highlights the importance of AI diplomacy, emphasizing control over the AI narrative as critical in the evolving global power dynamics.
