97th Academy Awards: Viewership Decline Amidst Technical Challenges

Approximately 18.1 million people tuned into the 97th Academy Awards, marking a 7% decrease from the previous year when viewership reached 19.5 million. The Oscars achieved the highest rating among adults aged 18-49 for the season, with a rating of 3.92, up 3% from the previous year. Among adults aged 18-34, it recorded the highest ratings in five years at 3.17.
The Hulu livestream experienced technical difficulties, with over 34,000 user reports of access problems shortly after the ceremony began, and issues were reported again before the best picture announcement, potentially affecting overall viewership numbers.
The ceremony was hosted by Conan O’Brien, marking his first time hosting the Oscars, and he received positive reviews for his performance. Major awards included “Anora,” which won best picture, Mikey Madison winning best actress, and Sean Baker winning awards for best director, editing, and original screenplay.
Following the Oscars, ABC aired a half-hour preview of “American Idol,” achieving 5.9 million viewers—its biggest season launch in three years. This overview reflects both the successes and challenges faced during the 97th Academy Awards telecast.
