In 2025, the Cost of Living Index by Numbeo reveals that New York City and San Francisco top the global list for the highest living costs, with New York’s estimated total monthly expenses for one person being $5,613.75, including rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center at $3,926.65. San Francisco follows with total living expenses of $4,779.18, comprising $1,556.60 for basic expenses and $3,222.58 for rent. Other notable cities include London, where the total cost is $4,083.91 with a rent of $2,772.91, and Singapore, with similar expenses totaling $4,052.88. Chicago’s total is $3,612.64, while Sydney’s is $3,275.81. Lisbon, Tokyo, and Seoul show lower totals, with costs of $2,263.63, $2,074.88, and $1,896.17 respectively. Shanghai, Mumbai, and Jakarta exhibit even more economical living, with monthly costs of $1,541.25, $1,056.90, and $909.90 respectively. Given these variations, financial experts recommend the 50-30-20 budgeting rule, allocating 50% for essentials, 30% for discretionary spending, and 20% for savings and investments, emphasizing the importance of assessing financial feasibility before relocating to these major cities.
