Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and US President Donald Trump co-chaired a significant peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, focusing on the future of Gaza and the newly established ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Mediation by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey culminated in the signing of a ceasefire agreement, marking an end to Israel’s prolonged offensive on Palestinian territories. At the summit, which saw the participation of over 20 world leaders, including King Abdullah of Jordan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, El-Sisi emphasized that Trump’s proposal represents a critical opportunity for lasting peace in the region. Trump praised the collective efforts of the world leaders and underscored the unique chance to move past historical conflicts. The summit also highlighted the ongoing discussion surrounding a two-state solution, with El-Sisi advocating for its necessity despite opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While Trump’s plan does not exclude the possibility of a Palestinian state, it proposes a phased approach contingent on reforms by the Palestinian Authority. European Council President Antonio Costa reiterated the EU’s commitment to a sustainable two-state peace and support for the Palestinian Authority. In a gesture of goodwill, El-Sisi awarded Trump the Order of the Nile, Egypt’s highest civilian honor, after the signing of the ceasefire document.
